Rafaela Silva is a 24-year-old woman, born in City of God, a very violent and poor part of the city. For years she fought against poverty and prejudice to stand on top of the sporting world. Where she used to live - there were no rules.
And she did it.
A 2004 Athens bronze winning olympian judoka medalist, Flavio Canto, set up a judo school “Flavio Kanto Instituto Reaccao” to provide hope and opportunities to underprivileged children. The teachers from the school saw the potential in that girl.
She likes pizzas and hamburgers. Even in the run-up for the Olympics in Rio 2016 she never quit eating junk food. Although admitted that she made the effort to switch to healthier food (“way to go, girl”).
But even more interesting:
During the London 2012 Olympics she was disqualified for an illegal hold in a preliminary round. Social media went “nuts”on her, even calling her a “monkey”. She even considered quitting sport.
But she never did. And she came back with her first Golden medal, golden medal for her country - for Brazil.
