Golf - sport, that has returned to the Olympic Games!

Golf as we know it today originated around the XIV cent. on the eastern coast of Scotland, however - game paganica - very similar to today’s golf (only the ball was much bigger), was played in the ancient Rome during the time of Julius Ceasar. It is believed that the first golfers were Scottish shepherds, who used the rabbit hole for the ball and had a bats made of wood. The first golf balls were made of hard leather, stuffed with feathers.

First major tournaments were organized in the mid - XIX century, also in Scotland. The rules were simple: the game is played with 9 or 18 holes, and the rules were to put the ball in the hole in as few attempts as possible. Golf appears for the first time in the Olympics in 1900 in Paris (at the Summer Olympics), but already after the second Olympics golf has been removed from the program because it didn’t gain popularity - competed only two countries.

After 112 years, the decision of the Congress in Copenhagen in 2009, golf has returned on the list of official Olympic discipline at the Olympic Games in 2016. At this year's Olympic Games in Rio more then 60 golfers took participation in the tournament.

Golf today, along with football and basketball, is one of the three most popular sports in the world. It is a sport for all generations. Although it is considered that golf is an elite, expensive sport, it actually falls in the category of the most massive individual sport on the planet. The basic equipment includes: set of bats (during the game max 14 bats can be used), balls, special golf shoes, equipment bag and other accessories such as gloves, umbrellas, etc.

We have prepared some interesting facts about this sport:

  • only three of the American Presidents did not play golf: Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman and Jimmy Carter.
  • it is the only sport that has been played on the moon.
  • there are no two identical golf courses.
  • there is no age limit.
