These two have first met in 2008 at a training camp in Singapore. Schooling had 14 years back then, and actually thanks to Phelps, he inspired a 14 year-old kid to move to the USA for extensive trainings.

In 2013 his mother May managed to persuade the National Service that her son would not go to the army, instead he would pursue his career in swimming and prepare for the Olympics. She even predicted a medal on this years Olympics saying: “In 2016 he will definitely be a finalist."

And she was right. Last week he won gold medal for Singapore, including Phelps leaving behind. “I’m proud of Joe. I’ve been able to watch him grow and turn into the swimmer that he is,” - said Phelps.

On the other hand, Schooling believes if it wasn’t for Phelps, he would not have become the champion he is today: “He is the reason why I wanted to be a better swimmer,” he said.

In Singapore, people called for a public holiday to celebrate the win.
